Existentialist Philosophy And Literature
This 16-week online course is an open access version of an academic class I have taught for a number of years, focused on key authors and texts in the broad 19th and 20th century Existentialist movement.
The fourteen authors we will study representative works by are Søren Kierkegaard, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Friedrich Nietzsche, Lev Shestov, Rainer Maria Rilke, Miguel De Unamuno, Franz Kafka, Martin Heidegger, Gabriel Marcel, Martin Heidegger, Gabriel Marcel, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Albert Camus, Frantz Fanon, and Keiji Nishitani.
Each week in a 90-minute online class session, we will discuss together key ideas, distinctions, images and metaphors, arguments, analyses, interpretations, or practices derived from Existentialist philosophy and literature. Class sessions are recorded, and students can rewatch them at their leisure. Downloadable handouts on the texts and thinkers are provided to students as resources.
