Overview Of Week 2: What We Will Be Reading, Discussing, and Learning

In week 2 of our class, we will be starting out with our first novel, one which Dick is perhaps most famous for, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, adapted in the early 1980s into the film The Blade Runner (which is quite different in many ways from the novel). We will be examining a number of key themes, including the difference between humans and AIs, the importance of empathy, the distinction between the fake and the real, and the emergence of a new, imaginary religion

The readings for this week are:

  • Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep

Supplemental readings you might find useful or interesting are:

  • the short story, "The Little Black Box"
  • the short story, “Imposter”
  • the speech, “The Android And The Human”
