The Main Readings For Our Class

For this class, we will be reading and discussing a variety of Philip K Dick's texts. Our primary focus will be on nine of his novels, but I will also be suggesting some of his short stories, interviews, speeches, and relevant portions of his Exegesis from time to time.

The novels we will be reading are:

  • Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?
  • A Maze Of Death
  • Ubik
  • The Three Stigmata Of Palmer Eldritch
  • The Man In The High Castle
  • Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said
  • A Scanner Darkly
  • Valis
  • The Divine Invasion

These are books which you can often find copies of at local libraries, both individually and in the Library of America 3-volume collection. If you don't want to purchase copies of the Dick novels we will be discussing, you should check your local libraries' holdings, since they often have multiple copies you can check out or request (Philip K Dick is quite popular).

If you are interested in purchasing those novels, you effectively have two options.

One is to purchase the 3-volume Library of America edition, which includes all of these novels and a few others as well. Here's an Amazon link to that edition.

The other is to purchase the novels individually. Mariner Books has inexpensive paperback editions of all of those novels. Here are Amazon links to each of those:

We will occasionally be referencing some of his short stories in certain of the sessions. There are a vast variety of short stories collections, many of which you can find in your local library as well.
