Topics, Scope, and Schedule For Our Seminar

This seminar is scheduled to take place on Saturday, January 31.

In our discussion and Q & A, it is likely that we may stray into other related topics connected to the topics below, but we will try to keep the discussion focused on the main topics for the seminar.

Here is the schedule for the seminar (all times are Central Standard Time)

9:00 AM CST - Part 1 of the Workshop

We will be discussing the following topics:

  • What is philosophy?
  • Motives and goals for studying philosophy
  • Areas or subdisciplines of philosophy
  • Approaches, traditions, schools, and movements in philosophy
  • Connections between philosophy and other disciplines
  • Whether and how reading lists are helpful
  • Where to get philosophy literature free or cheaply
  • Ambiguous terms needing clarification or qualification


11:00 AM CST - Part 2 of the Workshop

We will be discussing the following topics:

  • Study as an iterative and cumulative process
  • Starting/starting over points for studying philosophy
  • Making and assessing progress
  • Notetaking and annotation as practices
  • Style, structure, and genre of philosophical works
  • Finding, assessing, and using secondary sources
  • Concerns about translations
  • Distinguishing an author's position from others


1:00 PM CST - Part 3 of the Workshop

We will be discussing the following topics:

  • More about making progress
  • How to apply philosophy to life
  • Finding, managing, and using time
  • How deep to go before moving on
  • Comparing, contrasting, connecting philosophies
  • Finding other interested interlocutors or communities
  • Talking about philosophy with other people
  • Other issues participants want to dig into and discuss


Students enrolled in the seminar are free to attend and participate in as many or as few sessions as they would like to while it is running
